Among a hugely competitive field, your business shone through, how does that feel?!

It feels incredible, especially because we’re such a small rural pub and community project. A lot of what we do is built around people, connection, and supporting our local area, so to have that recognised on a national stage was really emotional. We’ve poured our hearts into creating something that’s more than “just a pub,” so it genuinely meant the world to us.

What’s been the best reaction you’ve had since the win?

Honestly, the local community reaction has been the best part. Seeing customers, neighbours, local suppliers, and volunteers feel proud of the achievement too has been amazing. We’ve had people come into the pub saying “we saw you in the paper!” or “this is brilliant for the village,” and that’s been really special.

Who inspires you in the food and drink world and why?

We’re really inspired by independent businesses that put people and community at the heart of what they do. There are so many amazing Welsh food producers, growers, brewers, and hospitality businesses quietly doing incredible work, often against huge challenges. We love businesses that are authentic, collaborative, and passionate about supporting local economies.

Got any words of wisdom for someone dreaming of launching a food or drink business?

Don’t wait until everything feels perfect — just start. Hospitality can be tough, but people connect with passion, personality, and authenticity far more than perfection. Build relationships, support others around you, and remember that community is one of the most valuable things you can create.

What drives you to create change or set new standards in the Welsh food and drink industry?

We really believe rural pubs can play a much bigger role in their communities than people sometimes realise. Through our Pubtopia CIC, we’ve been creating creative workshops, community projects, a village shop supporting local suppliers, dementia-friendly events, and plans for respite stays and wellbeing experiences. We want to show that hospitality venues can still thrive by becoming true community hubs.

What’s next for you and the business, any exciting plans on the horizon that you can share?

We’ve got lots happening! We’re currently developing our village shop further with a new vending machine project to improve rural access to local produce seven days a week. We’re also expanding our outdoor and marquee spaces for events, workshops, and accommodation, including bell tents and campervan facilities. Alongside that, we’re continuing to grow our creative and wellbeing programme through Pubtopia CIC.

Finally, what’s the best bit about being part of the Welsh food and drink scene?

The sense of community. Wales has such an incredible network of passionate, supportive, independent businesses and producers who genuinely champion one another. There’s a real warmth and pride in Welsh food and drink, and it feels very special to be part of it.
