Among a hugely competitive field, your business shone through—how does that feel?!
To be recognised as the rising star of the food and drink industry in Wales feels like I’m dreaming, when I started the business it wasn’t something I even considered could be me one day.
What’s been the best reaction you’ve had since the win?
I have had customers come in to the shop who have seen the award online and jokingly bowed to me, pretending I’m royalty which was funny!
Who inspires you in the food and drink world—and why?
Barti spiced rum is a Welsh product that I personally really enjoy and they have had great success with their huge online presence and supplying supermarkets, it shows that being all the way in Pembrokeshire doesn’t have to hold you back and that inspires me.
Got any words of wisdom for someone dreaming of launching a food or drink business?
If you have a product, start selling it on a small scale, get some feedback, get an idea of popularity and gradually build a customer base who will want to see you do well and promote for you in order for you to grow to business.
What drives you to create change or set new standards in the Welsh food and drink industry?
2 things drive me to put all my efforts into this business, the first being the need to have to have the best product in the market in my field. The second thing is to make Welshcakes a household treat all over the UK, too many people don’t know about them and they’re missing out!
What’s next for you and the business—any exciting plans on the horizon that you can share?
What’s next for us is getting through the summer, our busiest time of the year, heading to shows to meet some more of our amazing customers and increasing the number places we supply across the UK.
Finally, what’s the best bit about being part of the Welsh food and drink scene?
The best part of being a part of the Welsh food and drink scene is having the opportunity to showcase what Wales has to offer. It was a proud feeling being amongst the other Welsh producers at the awards evening and to contribute to the great roster of products.
